My Tram Flap Surgery – Breast Cancer Reconstruction
Tram-Flap Surgery for breast reconstruction after breast cancer is major surgery. The decision to have this type of surgery should not be made quickly. All options should be considered. Don’t get me wrong, the results are great, but the recovery is long and painful. I consider myself to be one tough cookie – even while going through the initial bi-lateral mastectomy, chemotherapy, and emergency surgeries. I’m sure that all patients are different, but here is what I experienced. I had already had the bi-lateral mastectomy , tissue expanders,and tissue expander removal, so I was mentally prepared for a short hospital visit and quick 4-6 week recovery. The nurses had me walk to the bathroom on the second day. Boy, was that painful! I had six tubes – 2 from each side, and 2 from my stomach area. There was no way to stand straight because the surgery takes so much tissue and muscles from the stomach area. It takes a while to “restretch” the stomach. I worked each day to walk a little farther. It was a major accomplishment to walk to the front door. It took about a week to be able to make it about 12 feet. Now, not only do I have the pain from the surgery, but my back is hurting from being bent over so much. The doctor said it would take about a year to fully recover, and he was not joking! I stayed out of work for 2 months. It has been 9 months since the tram-flap surgery and I still cannot do some of the things I could do before. I think the key is to exercise and stretch daily.
I guess the one good thing is that my breasts are still “dead” from all of the surgeries. They look good! The color is the same color as my stomach! I didn’t have a lot of fat in my stomach, so I was pretty small. But, I finally had some breasts again! Since then, I have had breast implants, nipple “reconstruction” and nipple “tattooing”. I look almost normal again – at least from a distance!
I am glad that I had the surgery, but would not recommend it to anyone who is not active and not motivated to recover. It would have been very easy for me to lay in bed every day in pain. Trust me, most days were a struggle. But I am young and want to enjoy the rest of my life cancer-free! If you decide to have the surgery, be sure that you have positive people surrounding you. You will need a strong support team that will motivate you to get up and move!
I thank God for giving me another chance at life. I am forever grateful to my mother and husband for being here with me through all of my surgeries and recoveries. I am especially thankful for my mother, my daughter Jessica and my sister Glenda who were always there to motivate and encourage me. The outpouring of support from my friends and family was sincerely appreciated. The cancer diagnosis took me totally by surprise and my life was changed literally overnight. But now, I sing like no one is listening and dance like no one is watching!!

Wir haben uns schon sehr oft darüber gestritten und haben ständig Stress miteinander deswegen. Auch gestern wieder, er sagte zu mir ich geh mal eben ne Stunde zocken. Dann waren es 8 Stunden. Vor zwei Wochen hatten wir uns super gestritten, und er entschuldigte sich nachher und fragte mich wie er es wieder gut machen könnte ich sagte, bleibe 4 Wochen von den Spielautomaten fern und dann ist es in Ordnung. Nach einer Woche hat er wieder Spielautomaten gespielt. Erst sagt er zu mir, du bist mir so wichtig, ich will dich nicht verlieren wegen der Spielhalle und am nächsten Tag sagt er zu mir, sperre mich doch gleich in einem Käfig, ich darf ja gar nix oder er sagt zu mir ich mache was cih will . Er sagt ich spinne und ich würde übertreiben . Wir reden immer und immer wieder über sein Problem. Und es ändert sich einfach nicht. Ich weiß echt nicht was ich tunsoll, er entschuldigt sich immer wieder und am nächsten Tag sitzt er wieder da. Unsere Beziehung geht langsam echt zu Grunde.
Meine Frage, was kann ich tun? Sind meine Sorgen berechtigt oder sehe ich alles zu eng und übertreibe?
